Call for Entry: Gallery Vertigo, Vernon, B.C.

SAQA WC member, Brigitte Red, is a Board member of Vertigo Gallery in Vernon, B.C.  The Gallery has initiated a Call for Entry for fibre artists:

“Wild Life” Fibre Exhibit

Gallery Vertigo, Vernon, BC
Exhibit Date March 6 – 31, 2018

Show Concept:

Gallery Vertigo is inviting fibre artists to submit to a scheduled exhibit entitled Wild Life. What’s your vision of Wild Life; a landscape of the Serengeti; penguins frolicking in the surf; maybe it’s that cute little gecko who speaks for Geico. Wait maybe it’s the wild attendees at a rock concert? Skydiving? Bungee jumping?

We are challenging fibre artists to interpret the theme of “Wild Life” in whatever direction your creative muse sends you. The fibre art piece may be either realistic or an abstraction of the theme.

Eligibility and Guidelines: PLEASE PAY CAREFUL ATTENTION TO THESE REQUIREMENTS; ANY SUBMITTED PIECES THAT DEVIATE FROM THESE PARAMETERS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.

  1. Fibre art pieces must be a creative visual work that is layered and stitched or that references this form of stitched layered structure. Fibre art sculpture is also acceptable.
  2. The Fibre Art piece must be prepared in such a manner as to be ready to hang in the Gallery. In the case of a fibre sculpture it must be able to display as a “stand alone” without additional supports.
  3. Fibre art piece should have a perimeter of no larger than 120 inches.
  4. Any works entered which deviate from the guidelines and submission requirements may be rejected at the discretion of the Exhibition Chair.
  5. Artists are responsible for shipping and insurance to and from Gallery Vertigo.
  6. Artwork MAY be for sale. Gallery Vertigo will charge a 30% commission on all sales.
  7. The Artist(s) confirms the artwork entered does not violate any copyright laws.
  8. By submitting your work for exhibit, the Artist(s) confirms she/he will adhere to all the above.

An All-Canadian Call for Entry

Ailsa Craig is a small town in Southern Ontario, the name of which is fast becoming synonymous with "International Quilt Show".  From its inception, the Ailsa Craig Fibre Arts Exhibit -- completely volunteer-run -- has focused on presenting work in textiles from artists around the world, one country at a time: the Netherlands, Denmark, Israel, Great Britain, France, Latvia and now...

CANADA!

Help celebrate Canada's Sesquicentennial!

This Call for Entry is open online NOW  through January 31, 2017.  Pieces must have been created between January 2014 and February 2017, and measure a minimum of 30" x 30" to a maximum of 80" x 80".  The cost is $40 CAD for a maximum of three pieces.

This is a juried exhibit.  Selected pieces must be sent to the ACQFAF no later than April 1, 2017.  Shipping to the venue is at the cost of the artist; however, return shipping will be covered by the ACQFAF, as well as insurance for the pieces for the duration of the Festival and their return to the artist.

Having visited the ACQFAF on its opening day in May 2016 -- to see the work of Latvian fibre artists, both quilted and woven, I have to say --- I was impressed!  The entire village gets on board for the Festival, and the atmosphere was electric!  Ailsa Craig is a delight to visit -- and its only 1/2 hour's drive from London, Ontario, and 45 minutes from Stratford, so anyone planning to take in the Festival could expand that to include theatre, art, and museum visits as well.

Cynthia McNair, a SAQA member, is on the Board of the Festival; she and I met at that opening day last spring, and I assured her I would spread the word about the 2017 Festival far and wide around our Region.

Here's Cynthia modelling a quilted creation from one of the Latvian artists:

Wow!

So...tell your quilting friends, your art group buddies, your POD members, your Guild members, your Surface Design and SAQA colleagues...Spread the word!  Spread the celebration!

A Call for Canadian Artists!

Moonlight Over Cordova (C)
Joan Hug-Valeriote

While at the Opening of the My Corner of the World twin exhibits in Stratford last May, yours truly* chanced to meet SAQA member Joan Hug-Valeriote, an Ontario artist who is mounting a multi-media exhibit of Canadian art quilts to celebrate Canada's Sesquicentennial (that's 150 years since Confederation) in 2017.

Now Joan is inviting all Canadian art quilters to be part of this unique presentation of both photographed and actual art quilts:

Be a part of celebrating Canada's Sesquicentennial Year by submitting photographs of your Contemporary Canadian Art Quilts for inclusion in an exciting multimedia Video and Art Quilt display curated by Joan Hug-Valeriote in the Berlin Tower Artspace, Kitchener City Hall, during April and May 2017.

This Call is open NOW and entries will be accepted through October 24, 2016.

For more details, click on Call for Entry .

My Corner of the World: Canada!

Yesterday on the SAQA website not one -- but two! --  Calls for Entry were posted -- the result of many months of hard work and planning.

Special thanks go to Martha Sielman, our Executive Director, Gwyned Trefethen, Chair, SAQA Exhibition Committee and her entire team, to William Reker, SAQA Traveling Exhibition Coordinator, and most importantly, to MICAELA FITZSIMMONS, our steadfast negotiator and Canadian liaison for both the all Canada (Regional) Exhibition and International MCOTW Exhibition. Micaela has been selected to act as Juror for both the International and Canadian traveling exhibitions.

Also, very special thanks go to Christine Nielsen, SAQA Regional Representative, Atlantic Canada, who carried the appeal to the SAQA Board of Directors that Canadian members of SAQA were keen to support an ALL CANADA SAQA members exhibition... a very special Exhibition that would speak to the majesty, diversity, cultural values and strong partnerships that exist all across Canada, supporting the Arts, and in our case, particularly the Fibre Arts as members of Studio Art Quilt Associates.

SAQA invites each and every one of its Canadian SAQA members to consider the Call for Entry, posted at SAQA.com (check under the "Resources" tab) and begin now to plan their very special quilts, destined to be a part of this truly wonderful Exhibition opportunity.

MY CORNER OF THE WORLD - CANADA

The SAQA 'All Canada' (Regional) Exhibition

You are invited, as a Canadian artist, to create a glimpse of the spirit of Canada; to convey through your art something true, meaningful and important about our beautiful country and its people. We are excited by the thought of galvanizing our creative community to express and share, through this exhibit, our vision of Canada.

Few countries are as richly blessed as ours in geography, humanity, diversity, and artistic tradition. A vision of your corner of Canada might capture a vignette of everyday life or a unique landscape. Perhaps it is a reflection on the mosaic of Canadian peoples or draws on some iconic feature of Canadian history or ideals. Whether reverent, reflective, funny or whimsical, the story you tell should embody the Canadian experience from your unique corner of this land.

Daring to capture the ocean in a cup, you might look for inspiration to the great masters of Canadian artistic expression, visual artists, musicians and writers who have interpreted an essential feature of Canadian life with such perfection that it reflects something authentic about the whole country.

Your artwork can be representational or take an abstract approach. Let the cloth speak to the viewers. We are eager to see what the hearts, minds and skills of Canadian textile artists will craft as a woven love song to this unique and beautiful land.

AND the second call?

A TWO PART EXHIBITION is coming to Stratford Perth Museum in May of 2016!

At the same time, SAQA has posted the INTERNATIONAL CALL and Prospectus for the partner exhibition opportunity to open at Stratford next spring.

MY CORNER OF THE WORLD is open to all members of SAQA around the globe, (and yes!!! our Canadian members may submit entries to both concurrent Exhibition Calls for Entry).

While the Canadian (Regional) Exhibition will tour Canada for up to two years (and may have the opportunity to travel to Europe), the International Exhibition will tour not only in tandem with the Canadian Exhibition while here in Canada, but will travel in the United States as opportunities become available.

All of the juried quilts will premier at STRATFORD PERTH MUSEUM in Stratford, ON in May of 2016 and travel for at least two years.

Dreams do come true... and how very exciting this opportunity can be for each of our members across Canada.  We hope you will join your fellow SAQA members here and abroad in making these two exhibitions a reality!!!

Please take the time now to visit the link below for all of the details for the two separate Calls for Entry  and view each Exhibition's information/requirements.

We encourage you to share the news with your friends in Canada who are  SAQA members, and invite friends and colleagues to consider membership in SAQA so they too may take advantage of this opportunity to speak to Canadians across the country with their Art ...

Thanks once again to the entire Exhibitions Committee/SAQA Board team... and we join them in looking forward to your participation!

All of the information, and the Exhibition Prospectus outlining the entry details may be found at
