On Now, Coming Soon...and Other News

In Alberta, Calgary area members and friends -- collectively known as "Spectra Textile Arts" -- are on show later this month at Calgary's Southern Jubilee Auditorium!  SAQA WC members participating include Ilse Anysas-Salkauskas, Marie McEachern, Barbara J. West, Margaret Jessop, Beverly Patkau, and Linda Van Gastel.  If you're able, do join them in the Auditorium's Lower Lobby for their Reception on Friday, November 29 at 7 p.m.

Also in Alberta, member Margaret Blank will have ten of her "matted minis" on show -- and for sale -- at the "Encore Under $100 Art Market" to be held November 21 (4 p.m. - 10 p.m.) and November 22 (10:00 a.m. - 4 p.m.) at the Lacombe Memorial Centre.

The Market is a new event this year at the City's annual "Light Up the Night" Festival, and the commissions taken on the works sold will go toward the Lacombe Arts Endowment Fund.

Meanwhile in B.C., member Terry Aske has finally revealed the artwork she exhibited at the "LAD Anonymous Art Show" held last month in New Westminster.  Congratulations, Terry, on selling two of the three pieces she had accepted into the show!  Check the link to her blog post for the reveal!

And Karlie Norrish McChesney currently has work on exhibit at the Ranger Station Art Gallery 98 Rockwell Drive, Harrison Hot Springs, B.C.  Her exhibit opened November 2 and runs through December 8.  Gallery hours are 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. weekdays and noon - 4 p.m. on weekends.  Karlie is showcasing some new work in this exhibit, including the following (shared from her Facebook post):

REMINDER: Margaret Blank is retiring as Blog Editor as of December 31, 2019.  The blog has been a valuable way to share information -- especially about member accomplishments -- with photos and stories -- for those who don't use other forms of social media.  A new editor is needed if the blog is to continue to provide this service to these members in our far-flung Region.  If you are interested in taking over this spot, contact either Regional Rep (Jennie Johnston or Susan Selby) or Margaret herself.

What's On? What's Coming?

SAQA WC member Lesley Turner recently posted about her contributions to an exhibit now on at the Portals Gallery, located in the lobby of the Islands Saving Recreational Centre of the  Cowichan Arts Council in Duncan, B.C.

The Articulation Textile Group, of which she and SAQA WC member Wendy Klotz are a part, attended the Artists' Reception on April 13 for the Group's show, Forest and Sea and the Place Between, on NOW through April 19.

At left is a detail from one of Lesley's pieces in the show, entitled "Cedar Wind Drawing".

The Group's next planned exhibition -- Icelandic Culture in Gimli -- will take place July 1 through August 31 at the New Iceland Heritage Museum, Gimli, Manitoba.


Meanwhile in Calgary, Spectra Textile Arts Group is showing their work at the Fish Creek Public Library -- on NOW through April 29:

SAQA WC members in this group include Ilse Anysas-Salkauskas, Joyce Brown, Margaret Jessop, Marie McEachern, Beverly Patkau, Linda Van Gastel and Barbara J. West.

And in central Alberta, SAQA WC member Margaret Blank has been juried into the 20th Annual ENCORE! Lacombe Art Show & Sale, taking place at the Lacombe Memorial Centre, Lacombe, Alberta, on April 26 and 27.  This is Margaret's eighth year participating in this event, which includes work from a variety of art and fine craft artists.

August Update - Part I

First, many thanks to Bethany Garner, former SAQA Central Canada Co-Rep, who visited the My Corner of the World: Canada exhibit now showing at the Mississippi Textile Museum in Almonte, ON, and took wonderful photos of the pieces in situ.

In an e-mail to the participating artists, Bethany described the set-up of the exhibit thus:

[I] Had a nice visit at the Mississippi Valley Textile Museum in Almonte with fibre friends on Saturday and thoroughly enjoyed seeing your beautiful SAQA My Corner of the World Canada quilts hanging throughout the Museum. The artwork is in a number of various areas through the Museum, as the big PUPPET exhibit is in the main gallery on the first floor. There were not enough of the SAQA quilts to fill the big Gallery, but honestly, I love the juxtaposition of the quilts in areas where the visitors walk and stop to talk, along the stairwells, front lobby, near the gift shop entrance and they are spectacular in the big upper floor gallery, scattered along the walls as the visitors visit the "Fabric of a Small Town" exhibit that is permanent now in the mill after several years of restorations just completed and celebrates the history of the MILL - and why so many visit the Mill Museum so beautifully restored by volunteers for the Almonte Community. We are blessed to have the quilts in this beautiful summer location during tourist season for sure.

Many of the quilts are in small groups, and as you can understand, in an old Mill with scared stone and plaster walls, the hanging options are few. I simply loved the way the art quilts worked to draw the viewers, hanging proudly along the walls among the Mill equipment, the stacks of wooden trays for sorting bobbins and small tools of the trade and the looms and carding equipment - samples of the actual cloth making. So appropriate to our story. I did capture all of your quilts on the cell phone, and will get better photos next visit!

...Your quilts have survived their travels to England, France, Italy and Poland over the past two years very nicely... and they look beautiful in their setting. It was a rainy day, but I had a chance to get a few good cell phone photos which I have posted at the SAQA Central Canada Blog... they are random and apologies to Janet, as her photo is a bit dark - but the quilt which is mainly made of woven strips of paper maps and sheers hangs tall and beautiful between two great windows in the Gallery - so do visit and see "White Pine: Titan of the Shield" for yourself in all of it's glory. There are catalogs of the exhibit available in the Museum Gift Shop, and they were in the hands of several of the visitors - so SAQA is getting the recognition and interest we hoped for! Each quilt tells YOUR story and is an amazing celebration of what Canada represented for you as you worked to tell your own story.

Next, there's an exhibit on NOW at the Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium in Calgary, Alberta.  Entitled Abstraction, it's presented by the Calgary-based art quilt group "Spectra" and includes the work of these SAQA WC members, and friends: Ilse Anysas Salkauskas, Joyce Brown, Diane Duncan, Margaret Jessop,  Marie McEachern, Beverly Patkau and Linda Van Gastel -- pictured below with colleagues at the recent Opening Reception:
