Puzzled by Artist Statements?

Jill Sullivan, rep for BC wanted to share her thoughts about artist statements. She writes:

"Many of us, who are not regular participants in exhibitions or may be new to the process altogether,  are sometimes puzzled by just what is being asked for in the Call For Entry. One of the things that was always unclear to me was what to say in the Artist's Statement.  As I was reading the latest SAQA Journal, I found the best summary yet!

Make sure to read Volume 20, No.4, Fall 2010 of the SAQA Journal. It has an article called PAM Review Committee - First Year Reflections on page 29. The paragraph  I am referring to can be found in the center of the page, and it clearly conveys just what to include in the 'artist's statement'. Just as important it points out what not to include! Last but not least, it tells us to "keep it short, and to the point, and in the first person".

I realize most of us read the Journal cover to cover, but just in case you missed this article during the busy Christmas season I wanted to make sure to point out this interesting contribution by Leni Levenson Wiener. Hope this helps everyone with recent and upcoming Calls For Entry."

Remember: Submissions for the July Exhibition for Western Canada SAQA members opens February 1st... Get your submissions ready!

Blog Launch off to a Great Start

Thanks to all you members with Eagle Eyes!
Launching this blog was well worth the effort already! I have never heard from so many of you! It is great to know that this site will provide a tool for communication for all of us!
I appreciate your feedback and notes to point out what might be missing on this blog and what could/should be added. One dilemma I have not been able to solve is linking the name with the website of those that have them. If you have experience with this on blog spot, please email me and I will tidy up the sidebar to contain names only. Right now you have to copy and paste the url into the browser... a bit inconvenient!
Meanwhile I have updated the Portfolio information. Any of you members who have not obtained PAM status, please reconsider. There will be one more PAM evaluation committee meeting in March just prior to the call for entry for Portfolio 18. Here is a link to the info on how to become a PAM.

A Promise Kept...

A New Year -  New Goals to Meet! Welcome to the newly launched SAQA Western Canada  blog.

Plans to design and publish this particular blog to provide a common platform to members have been in the design stages for some time. Members and guests alike are encouraged to visit the site often. As with any blog the premise will be to generate discussion of relevant topics, post calls for entries and provide a forum for feedback and suggestions.

Members names have been posted on the sidebar with appropriate links to their website or blog.  Future goals include the creation of a rotating slide show of member's work. Please communicate your expectations for this blog with your reps!

With this brand-new blog for the group I would like to take the opportunity to introduce the newest co-rep to you. After nearly 3 years of growing the membership in Western Canada solo I invited M. Jill Sullivan from Sechelt, BC to join me in the SAQA effort. With steadily growing membership numbers I am pleased that BC now has their very own SAQA rep. Jill and I will work together on your behalf.

Feel free to comment below or contact us directly!

Happy New Year!

Anna Hergert (SK rep) & Jill Sullivan (BC)
