SAQA's Annual Appeal
From Martha Sielman:
In this year's annual appeal letter, I'm asking you for two things: a statement about why you're passionate about SAQA and a donation. We'd like to hear from you about what SAQA means to you. Your statements will become part of a new design for the website that we're beginning to work on, to help explain to others why this is such a wonderful organization.
Why are we asking for a donation?
Because it takes almost exactly $400,000 to run SAQA's programs each year (not counting conferences). Membership dues cover 41%, the Benefit Auction covers 13%, and book sales, jury fees, exhibit rentals cover another 23%. The rest comes from you, from your generous donations to our annual appeals.
SAQA runs on people power - your power. You volunteer, you create pieces for the Auction, you attend regional events, you write articles for the Journal, you enter your artwork in our exhibits and Portfolios.
And we also need you to donate each year. It doesn't have to be a lot. If everyone sent in just $20, we could raise $60,000 for this appeal. If you are able to give more, then we can start work on some of the new initiatives that we'd like to pursue, such as more support for regional exhibition opportunities, more educational programs, and more outreach to curators and gallery owners.
You can save SAQA money and help support SAQA's exhibition and publications programs by making your donation online now before your letter is mailed out: www.saqa.com/store.php?cat=13
Please write "Annual Appeal" in the Instructions field and include a short sentence about why you are passionate about SAQA.
Thank you for your support!

B.C. Parlour Meeting
Eight of us met at the home of Jennifer Cooper. It was great to meet some of our fellow members and learn alittle about each other.
As a new group we had serveral things to discuss. One very imprortant aspect is to have a local group that is active and relevant to us. Regular meetings will also help to keep everyone up to date about all that is happening. As a group we must decide what we want the group to do for us.
Many are interested in compiling lists of support such as web sites, books, stores, and whatever else seems os use to us.
One of the issues raised was why SDA and SAQA are not one organization. Paulette Cornish spoke to this issue by telling us of her experience at the conference in Denver where they discussed what our organization stands for.
Paulette and Jennifer have both tsken part in the Visioning Project and spoke about what it meant to them
We feel that with leadership we can create a strong, active group in our area. Things such as a local blog would help keep us in touch.
After show and share, there was a proposal to do critques using the SAQA outline.
Achieving a workable group means meeting regularly, probably in the lower mainland.
Everyone present agreed to think about what they want this branch of SAQA to do for them and then we will create goals that we hope will include all members.
We made a start and we will keep moving forward with the participation os all the great members and new members to come

Attention SAQA members who had work in the NJS in London
To all SAQA Western members that submitted pieces into the Canadian National Juried Show. I just got off the phone with Diane Carson, NJS Coordinator. I called because of the Postal Strike that is to occur at midnight. All out of Province pieces are with her and will not ship until she knows what is happening with Canada Post. If the strike looks like it will go for an extended period of time then she will find another means to transport our pieces back to us like UPS?

We are inundated with countless chat groups, social networking opportunities and online "screen sucking" activities nowadays, and to consider joining another online group might be something you are avoiding.
However, I urge you to rethink your decision and check out the SAQA yahoo group. You are in control: YOU decide to sign up and choose the way to receive the messages posted. Here is the link to check it out and sign up http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SAQA/
And if you are still hesitating - here is proof why I am happy I receive the digests or I would have missed this amazing Financial Times Article by Simon Schama, respected art critic. Check it out http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SAQA/

Are YOU a SAQA Yahoo group follower?
I must confess that I don't follow the chat group regularly but every once in a while something catches my eye that is of relevance or particular interest. Just today I have been following an interesting thread about Art Quilt shows and judging.
The following cought my eye initially and I felt the need to share:
Jean Ray Laury, an early inspiration to many of us, passed away on Wednesday. She is such a memorable icon in the art quilting world!
This article is a true tribute to Jean:

Membership update
I have just spent some time this afternoon reviewing the SAQA regional membership pages. There are two lists on the SAQA website that differ somewhat. I realized that several new members have not been officially welcome yet!
I apologize for this oversight and want everyone to know that when you look at the membership list and notice a member's name missing - do not hesitate to contact me immediately and make me aware of this!
While you are on the blog - please have a look at the list and check if the info provided for you is up-to-date!
Thanks, Anna

SAQA offers two memberships. While all members are eligible to participate in Calls for Entry across the board, the Call for Submission for inclusion in the SAQA Portfolio is open exclusively to PAMs.
Consider applying for PAM membership, if you have contemplated a status change over the past year. The deadline for consideration by the PAM selection committee is March 1st! There is still time for you to gather and organize the required documentation!
Click here to see what you need to do!

Message from the SAQA President
From Sandra Sider:
After three months of settling into my new position as SAQA's President, I have been thinking about the challenges of this honor and how I might best serve our members. I have been phoning the SAQA regional representatives, listening to their concerns and ideas, and speaking with individual members. Below are the three main goals that I hope to accomplish between now and the fall of 2013, with your help.
1. Guide the Board through a five-year long-range planning process, in which we look to the future of our organization and determine how we can better serve the members. We have a planning committee in place, chaired by Kris Sazaki, and have already begun meeting via conference calls. Our long-range planning will be the focus of two days of Board meetings in Denver.
2. Chair the SAQA Endowment Campaign (to be launched this spring), with the goal of raising at least $150,000 by the end of 2013 in a permanent fund, whose earnings will enable some of the initiatives in #1 to be developed, and also support our other projects. Soon you will be receiving a letter in the mail about the endowment campaign, and we will have an endowment page on the web site.
3. Travel across the U.S. and Canada, giving critique sessions without any fee for our regional groups, raising the awareness of quilts as an art form and encouraging the establishment of local critique groups. These sessions, directed especially toward non-PAM members, will include works in progress as well as completed quilts.
Thank you to the Western Canada members that have already expressed interest in Sandra's offer to visit and offer a free critique session. If you are interested, please let your regional rep know as soon as possible, so we can begin to plan a visit by SAQA president Sandra Sider.

Puzzled by Artist Statements?
Jill Sullivan, rep for BC wanted to share her thoughts about artist statements. She writes:
"Many of us, who are not regular participants in exhibitions or may be new to the process altogether, are sometimes puzzled by just what is being asked for in the Call For Entry. One of the things that was always unclear to me was what to say in the Artist's Statement. As I was reading the latest SAQA Journal, I found the best summary yet!
Make sure to read Volume 20, No.4, Fall 2010 of the SAQA Journal. It has an article called PAM Review Committee - First Year Reflections on page 29. The paragraph I am referring to can be found in the center of the page, and it clearly conveys just what to include in the 'artist's statement'. Just as important it points out what not to include! Last but not least, it tells us to "keep it short, and to the point, and in the first person".
I realize most of us read the Journal cover to cover, but just in case you missed this article during the busy Christmas season I wanted to make sure to point out this interesting contribution by Leni Levenson Wiener. Hope this helps everyone with recent and upcoming Calls For Entry."
Remember: Submissions for the July Exhibition for Western Canada SAQA members opens February 1st... Get your submissions ready!
Questions? Email any or all of your SAQA Western Canada reps!

Blog Launch off to a Great Start
Thanks to all you members with Eagle Eyes!
Launching this blog was well worth the effort already! I have never heard from so many of you! It is great to know that this site will provide a tool for communication for all of us!
I appreciate your feedback and notes to point out what might be missing on this blog and what could/should be added. One dilemma I have not been able to solve is linking the name with the website of those that have them. If you have experience with this on blog spot, please email me and I will tidy up the sidebar to contain names only. Right now you have to copy and paste the url into the browser... a bit inconvenient!
Meanwhile I have updated the Portfolio information. Any of you members who have not obtained PAM status, please reconsider. There will be one more PAM evaluation committee meeting in March just prior to the call for entry for Portfolio 18. Here is a link to the info on how to become a PAM.

A Promise Kept...
A New Year - New Goals to Meet! Welcome to the newly launched SAQA Western Canada blog.
Plans to design and publish this particular blog to provide a common platform to members have been in the design stages for some time. Members and guests alike are encouraged to visit the site often. As with any blog the premise will be to generate discussion of relevant topics, post calls for entries and provide a forum for feedback and suggestions.
Members names have been posted on the sidebar with appropriate links to their website or blog. Future goals include the creation of a rotating slide show of member's work. Please communicate your expectations for this blog with your reps!
With this brand-new blog for the group I would like to take the opportunity to introduce the newest co-rep to you. After nearly 3 years of growing the membership in Western Canada solo I invited M. Jill Sullivan from Sechelt, BC to join me in the SAQA effort. With steadily growing membership numbers I am pleased that BC now has their very own SAQA rep. Jill and I will work together on your behalf.
Feel free to comment below or contact us directly!
Happy New Year!
